Major surface upgrade announced for Wonthaggi Recreation Reserve Oval
Bass Coast Shire Council has announced a major upgrade for Wonthaggi Recreation Reserve Oval via $250,000 in funding from the latest round of the Victorian Government's Country Football and Netball Program.
The funding is part of a broader initiative supporting regional football and netball clubs across Victoria. The total project, valued at just over $700,000, will enhance the playing surface by improving drainage, irrigation, and resurfacing. A new 130,000-litre water tank will also be installed to ensure efficient water use.
Council has committed $450,000 to the project, with an additional $25,000 investment from Wonthaggi Power Football Netball Club.
The existing surface, drainage tank, and irrigation system are estimated to be 25 to 30 years old, putting them well past their life expectancy. The much-needed upgrades will significantly improve the overall surface, subsurface drainage, and irrigation, ensuring a safe, high-quality playing surface for athletes and the wider community.
Bass Coast Shire Mayor Rochelle Halstead, welcomed the investment, noting "this upgrade is a game-changer for our community and region. Wonthaggi Recreation Reserve is a critical sporting and events hub for Bass Coast and beyond. These upgrades will ensure our community, from grassroots players to elite athletes, have a safe and high-quality facility to enjoy for years to come."
