Mackay Lagoon opens with a spectacular splash
More than 9,000 people have attended the official opening of Mackay Regional Councilâs new Bluewater Lagoon.
The $12.7 million lagoon project follows other Queensland lagoon developments and is expected to be a major attraction in the city.
The 3,000 metre2 water space, includes three separate lagoons, a water slide and children's play area.
Speaking at the opening, Mackay Regional Council Mayor Col Meng, stated that the lagoon will "play a pivotal role in promoting our wonderful lifestyle, allowing our residents to enjoy their leisure time while playing a part in attracting more and more families to move here."
Anticipated to attract in excess of 200,000 visitors per annum, the first two weeks of operation have far exceeded initial projections with over 19,000 people using the facility.
The development of the Bluewater Lagoon will be featured in the September/October 2008 issue of Australasian Leisure Management.
