Long-term capital works funding approved for The Events Centre Caloundra
The Sunshine Coast Regional Council has approved an injection of long-term capital works funding for its oldest and largest venue, The Events Centre Caloundra.
Aiming to improve the experience for patrons and visiting artists at the region’s primary performance venue, Sunshine Coast Councillor Tim Dwyer explained that the capital works will be "a positive step toward seeing the venue meet present and future demands.
“Some of the key improvements to patrons over the next five years include new seating in the Main and Playhouse Theatre, upgrade of air conditioning, improved disability access and a number of backstage upgrades which will enhance the experience of visiting artists.
“Last year, Council confirmed its ongoing commitment to our six key performance and community venues, including our oldest and largest venue, The Events Centre Caloundra, by adopting the Sunshine Coast Performance and Community Venues Service Plan 2014-2029.
“This Plan identified venues as a valuable asset of the Sunshine Coast that provide vibrant hubs for a diverse range of commercial, cultural and community activities across our region.
“The Plan sets a vision for Council to achieve a portfolio of venues that are well-equipped to cater for a diverse range of events, and offer captivating, creative experiences that will engage, excite and challenge our audiences.”
The Sunshine Coast Performance and Community Venues Service Plan recommended a Facility Development and Maintenance Plan for The Events Centre that had been developed to inform Council’s capital works program.
Councillor Dwyer added that the funding decision aligned "with the needs and aspirations of our community, and the performance and conference industry.
“Importantly, it will allow The Events Centre to be more a contemporary venue and subsequently competitive in an industry that around the country is more competitive than ever.
“The Events Centre is seeking to create the best possible experience for all industry stakeholders, our patrons, the creative community and the commercial sector alike.
“Upon confirmation of the capital works program, Council will work collaboratively with The Events Centre board and management to deliver the endorsed capital works program.”
The Events Centre Caloundra was established in 1980.
