Leisure Management Excellence to offer international industry study tours

Leisure Management Excellence, a company established in early 2018 to provide training and professional development opportunities for the aquatic and recreation industry, has announced that it will now be delivering a series of international study tours.

Leisure Management Excellence Director, John Summers explains that “whilst most other sectors have many opportunities to gain from the vast and extensive learnings that can be gained from international exposure, the aquatic and leisure sector has largely been deprived of such experiences and hence why we are now offering this opportunity to professionals within the sector.”

LME’s first tour will be to North America over a two week period in April/May 2020, with highlights to include visits to 14 major aquatic and recreation facilities in Vancouver and Victoria in Canada and  Los Angeles and Seattle in the USA – each selected due to their world leading designs and management and operating practices or due to their unique management models or program offerings.

The tour will also include attendance at the 2020 British Columbia Recreation and Parks Symposium (Conference) at Victoria on Vancouver Island, meetings with aquatic facility managers from the City of Vancouver, plus with representatives of the British Columbia & Yukon Lifesaving Society meeting with HCMA architects to hear about their world leading aquatic centre designs and networking opportunities with other recreation and aquatic specialists from around Australia and North America.

Having visited Vancouver in 2015, Summers was struck with the similarities to Australia regarding lifestyles, attitudes, as well as the societal challenges and issues they were seeking to address, but noted a range of innovative approaches to these challenges that the Canadians were applying in regards to facility design and management practices.

Consequently, he chose Vancouver as a must see stop on the tour while also appreciating that there is much to learn from Seattle and Los Angeles, and to have the tour aligned with the British Columbia Recreation and Parks Conference - which has up to 500 attendees.

Summers added that the Conference organisers are excited at having some Australians along, and have organised a few extra sessions where there are some information sharing workshops planned.

While The full package, which includes all flights, internal travel, conference fees, accommodation and meals, is based on starting from Melbourne, attendees from other states and New Zealanders can also be accommodated.
