Learn-to-swim and music vouchers available to Northern Territory families

The Northern Territory Government is continuing to help families and support local businesses by boosting the Sport Voucher Scheme. This year these vouchers can be used for swimming and music programs – including instrument hire – if delivered during school hours by registered activity providers.

More than $6 million is allocated to the scheme with the vouchers available to every child enrolled in school from preschool to year 12.

More than 250 local sport, cultural, drama and musical providers are part of the Territory Government’s Sport Voucher program.

Northern Territory Minister for Sport Kate Worden advises “we want to give every child the best start in life – we know engaging young people in sport and other activities provides them a better physical and psychological outlook.

“The sport vouchers mean parents and guardians can better manage the cost of these activities, and they also open the door for children to try new things and learn new skills.

“The new additions to the sport vouchers program mean all Territory children get the opportunity to learn an instrument and swim.”

Northern Territory parents and guardians will be able to apply now for:

• Urban sport vouchers - Families with children enrolled in urban schools are entitled to a $100 sport voucher each semester to help with the cost of their child participating in a chosen sport, active recreation or cultural activity, with the addition to use these funds to pay for music lessons, instrument hire and swimming learning lessons within school.

• Remote sport vouchers - Under the remote program, regional councils or Aboriginal corporations undertake remote community consultation to identify sport, active recreation or cultural activity preferences to provide in remote communities.

• Learn-to- swim - Provides children aged 0 to 5 years who are not enrolled in Transition or school with two $100 vouchers each semester to assist in reducing the cost of participating in water safety programs.

During 2021, 31,200 vouchers were redeemed with more than 2378 Learn to swim vouchers used.
