Latest club opening part of Planet Fitness' goal to ‘democratise’ fitness

Opening its latest club in the outer Sydney suburb of Campbelltown yesterday, Planet Fitness has now grown to 10 locations in Australia.

Covering 2,000 metres², the group-owned club offers low cost memberships - with memberships costing as little as $5 a week with no locked in contracts- aimed at reaching new demographics who are likely to have not previously been members of a fitness club. Planet Fitness offers a Black Card membership at $9.95 per week includes free spray tanning and red light therapy booths, the ability to bring your guest with each visit and use of any Planet Fitness globally.

As with the group's facilities around the world and its nine other locations in Australia, Planet Fitness Campbelltown provides a welcoming and friendly environment where people can feel comfortable regardless of their fitness level.

Explaining how providing a high-quality fitness experience in a non-intimidating environment is proving successful, Planet Fitness Australia Managing Director, Tanner Halton advises "our facilities are catering for markets that are underserved.

“Since its inception, fitness has been focused at the financially and physically elite, an expensive and intimidating proposition. And that's why only 15% of Australians belong to gyms.

"But we are here to democratise fitness.

"Most of our members are first time gym users or those haven't been a fitness club member for at least 10 years."

Here Halton sees the benefits or reaching new fitness consumers, explaining "I thoroughly believe that if gyms were less intimidating and simply cleaner, then more Australians would be active.

"I look at the life expectancy difference between different parts of the population and see the real opportunity to reach first time gym-users and areas that are underserved."

Arriving in Australia in late 2019, Planet Fitness' initial expansion plans were slowed by the pandemic but Halton advises that, with openings as of restrictions being eased "of our last seven openings, six have been in the top 10 performing Planet Fitness sites globally."

As for the immediate future, Halton adds "the Campbelltown is part of our pipeline to open another four clubs this year, with more to follow in the future."

With Planet Fitness locations combining with retail outlets, he also notes "landlords like us, with over 60% of our members cross shopping."
