Kryal Castle lowers its drawbridge

After a multi-million dollar redevelopment, Kryal Castle's world of myth, magic and medieval adventure re-opened at the weekend.

Having had its gates closed for more than 12 months during its redevelopment, history lovers came from across Australia, including Federal Tourism Minister Martin Ferguson, joined in a day of medieval themed festivities showcasing all of Kryal Castle's attractions and experiences including the Labyrinth of the Dragon's Sorcerer, the Torture Dungeon & Museum, the Castle Arena, the Knights Round Table Tower and Throne Room, and the Fairies and Goblins Wonderland.

Just eight kilometres from Ballarat, the forty year old replica medieval castle's new key interactive entry feature - the 'Labyrinth of the Dragon's Sorcerer' - received $110,000 towards its design and construction under the Federal Government's Tourism Quality Projects (T-QUAL) Grants program.

Miniser Ferguson welcomed the investment in regional tourism stating "the new accommodation, conference and unique medieval style events at Kryal Castle will add to the attraction of the Ballarat region, appealing to a range of visitors.

"Improved entertainment areas will now play host to cultural shows and re-enactments, and boast a range of medieval-themed interactive and special effect experiences.

"Tourism is an important part of the Ballarat regions economy with almost half a billion dollars spent in the region by visitors in 2011-12. Investments such as this which upgrade and build new tourism product will help increase the number of visitors to Ballarat and secure jobs for the region."

Kryal Castle will continue to showcase its existing medieval features, which include a moat, drawbridge, maze, castle towers, and armoury, as well as performances such as jousting, jester juggling, and fire eating.

Kryal Castle was also recently added to Ballarat Regional Tourism's Ballarat Pass a special pass to the city's top tourist attractions.
