IOC/IAKS LAUNCH 2011 SPORTS & LEISURE FACILITIES AWARD

The International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and the International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS) are calling for entries for their renowned architecture award 2011.
The IOC/IAKS award is the most important international architecture award for sports and leisure facilities. It not only awards building design but also recognises the successful operation of facilities.
The IPC/IAKS Distinction aims to promote accessibility to sports facilities and all other buildings in order to give people with a disability the opportunity to practice or view sport without limitation or barriers.
The projects are commended with the IOC/IAKS AWARD for Exemplary Sports and Leisure Facilities. The prizes are conferred in Gold, Silver and Bronze categories. Winners of the IPC/IAKS DISTINCTION will receive a special trophy with certificates. In addition, facilities with interesting aspects may be also award 'Special Distinctions'.
Eligible to compete are clients/operators and architects/engineers. The entry must be submitted jointly by operators and designers.
The award is presented in the following facility categories:

A. Major outdoor stadiums

Outdoor stadiums for competitions and events, e.g. for ball games, athletics and other use â with significant spectator facilities


B. Community outdoor grounds

Outdoor grounds for sports and leisure activities, e.g. for ball games, athletics and other use â with or without spectator facilities


C. Multipurpose halls and major arenas

Multipurpose halls and major arenas for competitions and events, e.g. for indoor sports and other use â with significant spectator facilities


D. Indoor centres for sports, leisure and recreation

Indoor centres with multiple components for competition, training, trend sports, leisure, recreation and other use â with or without spectator facilities


E. Single indoor facilities for sports, leisure and recreation

Indoor facilities with a single component for competition, training, trend sports, leisure, recreation and other use â with or without spectator facilities


F. Pools and wellness facilities

Indoor and outdoor pools, combined pools and thermal pools, wellness and health facilities, for sports, leisure and recreational activities


â with or without spectator facilities


G. Special sports facilities

Sports facilities for special sports disciplines, e.g. for ice sports, bob and luge, ski jumping, Alpine and Nordic skiing, motor racing, canoeing,


rowing, sailing, golf, equestrianism, shooting as well as beach sports, skating/boarding, free climbing etc.


The IOC/IAKS Award has been presented every two years since 1987.

Since the introduction of the award a total more than 300 sport and leisure facilities from more than 30 countries and across all continents have been awarded.


Presentations to award winners will take place at the of the 22nd IAKS Congress in Cologne, Germany on 26th October 2011.


The closing date for entries and all submitted documents is 31st March 2011.
