Industry leader James Strong dies

One of Australia's top business figures, James Strong, has died from lung complications following surgery.

Perhaps best known for his role as Chief Executive and Managing Director of Qantas from 1993 until 2001, Strong was also Chairman of organising committee for the 2015 Cricket World Cup in Australia and, since November last year, had been Chairman of the V8 Supercars motor-racing series.

He was also a former chairman of the Australia Council for the Arts and held senior roles with Woolworths, Rip Curl, IAG and Kathmandu.

Strong passed away peacefully on Sunday evening at a Sydney hospital as a result of "lung complications" following surgery.

In a statement, his family said he would be "profoundly missed by many", adding "(we) would like to thank the staff at the Mater Hospital for their care."

Colleagues of the renowned businessman have paid tribute to his work in the corporate and sporting worlds.

Former Qantas Chairwoman Margaret Jackson said her friend contributed to many aspects of life in Australia, stating "he was an extraordinary person (and) inspired people. He was great at putting interesting teams of people together and motivating them and working with them."

The board of the 2015 Cricket World Cup organising committee added that its members were "profoundly saddened" by Strong's death.

"James possessed a passion and vision for the tournament that set the tone for the entire organisation.

"(He was) a world-class leader, he was always friendly and approachable, taking the time to get to know the staff and listen to their views."
