Heart Foundation Local Government Awards

Entries for the 2010 Heart Foundation Local Government Awards are now open.

The awards seek to recognise councils that may be leading the way in creating healthy communities; building a sense of community, encouraging people to be active, be smoke free or make healthy food choices.

The Awards not only offer the chance for councils to receive recognition from the Heart Foundation but also to receive part of the $34,000 in cash awards and a plaque.

As a Heart Foundation spokesperson explains, "cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death and a major source of disability in Australia. However, people can reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease by making healthier lifestyle choices. Local governments which create supportive environments to promote better health and reduce the risk of chronic conditions can receive recognition through the Heart Foundation Local Government Awards.

The 2010 awards program has six categories:

• Employee Health and Wellbeing;
• Facilities;
• Healthy Weight;
• Planning for Active Living;
• Priority Groups; and
• Tobacco.

Entries close on 4th June 2010.
