Harry Graham Park confirmed as permanent location for trail bike track

Wollongong City Council has confirmed that Harry Graham Park, Figtree, is the chosen location for the popular trail bike track, which was created through the ‘Carve a New Trail’ initiative.

Next week, (from Monday 16th August) Council will start installing a fence around the bike track following confirmation Harry Graham Park will be the track’s permanent home.

Council designed and built the popular bike track at the end of 2020 with the help of community, in particular with local children, young people and families. Since then, the project has enjoyed overwhelming success with lots of people using the bike track.

In May 2021, Council held information sessions at the current site to discuss the project and ask for feedback, and invited community members to share their thoughts via an online survey. A key part of that community feedback was hearing thoughts on what location in Figtree would be the most appropriate for a permanent track.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery advised “there has been a lot of community interest from residents and keen bike riders in this project which is positive to see.

“The Figtree and West Wollongong community are passionate about the bike track project and I’m sure they’ll be pleased with Council’s decision to keep the bike track at its current location in Harry Graham Park, while making some minor adjustments with the inclusion of a new fence to ensure safety.”

Council aims to reopen the bike track for public use from Sunday 22nd August, once the fence is installed.

Lord Mayor Bradbery added “I know that there will be many Figtree residents who will be keen to get on their bikes and enjoy the use of the bike track. I’d like to remind everyone to continue to follow the Public Health Orders, even while exercising or riding a bike.

“That means make sure you stay 1.5 meters away from others, sanitise or wash your hands, wear a mask where appropriate and stay home if you’re feeling unwell.”
