Great Aussie Camp Out At Home an Easter alternative
With Australia’s camping areas shut due to Coronavirus restrictions, NSW families and outdoor enthusiasts have been forced to find alternate ways to embrace the Australian tradition of camping over Easter and the autumn school holidays.
“The Great Aussie Camp Out At Home’ is a movement gaining momentum on social media which sees families camping out in their own backyard, living room or balcony with some setups that are definitely more glamping than camping.
The Great Aussie Camp Out program was started by the Queensland Outdoor Recreation Federation (QORF) over 10 years ago, to encourage people to collectively embrace the joys of camping, which quickly went national.
The program has been modified to introduce the ‘At Home’ element due to people having to stay at home and reduce the risk of Coronavirus transmission in the community, flattening the curve and striving for the end of the epidemic.
Commenting on the initiative, Outdoors NSW Chief Executive, Lori Modde stated “the Great Aussie Camp Out At Home is a fabulous opportunity to get the family to create some fun memories and all with ease of access in your own backyard, balcony or loungeroom.
“We have set up a Facebook event if people want to share their activities with others and we have a number of resources that people can use to make their experience as ‘camp-authentic’ as possible, courtesy of our experienced outdoor professionals in NSW and around Australia.
“There is practical advice on setting up your camp, a selection of camp singalong songs and what activities you can do and games you can play.”
People who participate in The Great Aussie Camp Out At Home are encouraged to share their set up on social media using #campoutathome #outdoorsnsw and #greataussiecampout.
