Gold Coast secures Australian Gymnastics Championships for another two years

The Gold Coast has secured the Australian Gymnastics Championships for another two years with the event to be held at the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre and supported by Tourism and Events Queensland and Major Events Gold Coast.

The event is anticipated to bring over 1,200 competitors, officials, support staff and spectators from across Australia and overseas to compete for the title of National Champion across six different gymsports.

Gymnastics Australia Chief Executive, Alexandra Ash, said it was fantastic to see the growing legacy of gymnastics continuing in South East Queensland and noted “the Gold Coast has been home to this event and our premier participation event, National Clubs Carnival for a number of years now and we are excited to be able to continue to provide an opportunity for our participants and spectators to use these fantastic facilities and see their heroes perform live.

“Some of Australia’s most successful gymnasts have been from Queensland including, Olympic Silver medallist Ji Wallace and 8-time Commonwealth Games medallist Georgia Godwin.”

“It is because of role models like these, that nationally, and here in Queensland, Gymnastics is seeing a growth in popularity, with participation numbers looking likely to exceeded pre-COVID numbers which is also a testament to our clubs.”

Queensland Tourism and Sports Minister Stirling Hinchliffe added “we know when major events are staged on the Gold Coast, they bring thousands of competitors and spectators who invest millions in the local visitor economy and support more good jobs.”

Major Events Chief Executive, Jan McCormick said the region was delighted to be able to continue the partnership and host this world-class event and shared “the Gold Coast has become the home of Australian gymnastics in recent years with multiple national events now held here and some of the sport’s brightest young stars based on the coast and in SE Queensland.

“Today’s announcement that the Australian Gymnastics Championships will be held here for the next two years is fantastic for the Gold Coast both from a reputational perspective and for the boost it provides to our local economy with the event bringing in 1,200 of the country’s best gymnasts to the city along with about 8000 spectators.

“With our world class venues able to host the Australian Gymnastics, now and into the future, Major Events Gold Coast is proud to be able to support this premier event.”
