Gold Coast Marathon 2021 cancelled

Events Management Queensland has announced the cancellation of this weekend’s Village Roadshow Theme Parks Gold Coast Marathon.

The 42nd Village Roadshow Theme Parks Gold Coast Marathon was to return on 3rd – 4th July 2021 and was being promoted as the largest mass-participation event in Australia since COVID-19 decimated the event and festival industry across Australia more than 12 months ago.

However, due to the increasing threat of COVID-19 to the community and the subsequent restrictions, including the three-day lockdown enforced by the Queensland Government, Events Management Queensland has advised that they had been left with no choice but to cancel the Village Roadshow Theme Parks Gold Coast Marathon.

The ongoing health risks, impacts on workforce/volunteers, disruptions to travel and uncertainty ahead dictated drastic action to ensure there were no further threats to the health and wellbeing of participants, stakeholders and the wider Gold Coast community.

The Village Roadshow Theme Parks Gold Coast Marathon, organised by Events Management Queensland, was to feature eight races including the Village Roadshow Theme Parks Gold Coast Marathon (IAAF Label Road Race), Wheelchair Marathon, ASICS Half Marathon, Wheelchair 15km, Southern Cross University 10km Run, Gold Coast Airport 5km Fun Run, Health and Wellbeing Queensland 4km Junior Dash and 2km Junior Dash.

In their statement released today, the team at Events Management Queensland note “this decision has not been made lightly given the experience of the 2020 cancellation and comes with heartfelt disappointment.”
