2019 Gold Coast Marathon expected to attract record number of participants

Entries for the 41st Gold Coast Marathon opened this morning with more than 28,000 participants from over 50 countries expected to participate in the event 6th to 7th July next year.

Events Management Queensland Chief Executive Cameron Hart said the Gold Coast is going through a purple patch and expects it to continue well into 2019.

“We’re nearing the end of a stellar year for major events in the region, with the Commonwealth Games, the 40th Gold Coast Marathon and last month’s Pan Pacific Masters Games all breaking records and generating huge buzz for the city,” said Hart.

“We’ve seen this year that there is a strong appetite for events held here and we won’t be surprised if we see record participation from overseas, interstate and Queensland at next year’s marathon.

“Those who weren’t a part of our 40th anniversary celebrations know that they won’t want to miss out again, and those who were here will be keen to come back and relive the excitement of this gold label race."

Tourism and Events Queensland Chief Executive Officer Leanne Coddington said the Gold Coast Marathon reinforced Queensland’s standing as a major events destination and offered athletes a world-class experience.

“The Gold Coast Marathon is an internationally-recognised event in one of the world’s most popular holiday destinations, which this year delivered $25 million to the Queensland economy,” Coddington said.

“Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the 42km marathon sold out for the first time in history on the back of the hugely successful Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, attracting more than 60,000 participants and spectators from around the world and we look forward to another successful year in 2019.”

The 41st annual Gold Coast Marathon will feature eight races including the Gold Coast Marathon, Wheelchair Marathon, ASICS Half Marathon, Wheelchair 15km, Southern Cross University 10km Run, Gold Coast Airport Fun Run, Garmin 4km Junior Dash and Garmin 2km Junior Dash.

The Gold Coast Marathon is organised by Events Management Queensland, a major event management company wholly owned by the Queensland Government as part of Tourism and Events Queensland.
