Gold Coast inventor and Waterco advance chlorine-free commercial pool filtration
Having cleared regulatory hurdles in Queensland, Waterco's newly released Hydroxypure chlorine-free commercial swimming pool filtration system is set be introduced in swimming pools, spas, water features and waterparks across Australia.
Introduced at the Turtle Beach Resort in Mermaid Beach (pictured), the Hydroxypure system has been subject to a six-month evaluation with Gold Coast City Council's Health, Regulatory and Lifeguard Services Branch approving the continued use and extension of use of the water treatment system.
Waterco Group Marketing Director Bryan Goh explains "we believe this is the first large commercial pool in Australia to be approved without chlorine.
"We are thrilled that the system has been so successful at Turtle Beach and that the Council has given the okay for it to be rolled out across the Gold Coast."
Turtle Beach Resort Executive General Manager Stephen West has been impressed with the technology, stating "the chlorine-free pools are generating compliments from patrons on our Facebook page."
West previously owned 13 PoolWerx franchises on the Gold Coast and is a strong advocate of the Hydroxypure trials. The trial was a defensive strategy, as other resorts have been forced to close chlorine pools during peak season due to poor sanitation. Turtle Beach runs at 80% capacity year-round and relies on its pools, as it is not a beachside property.
Turtle Beach Resort tested the technology in its two busiest pools and one spa and will now extend the roll-out to all its pools and spas, plus a new $1 million water play park due for completion in April.
The new Hydroxypure system is the brainchild of Gold Coast inventor Nick Brisc with Waterco backing the innovation with $650,000 worth of investment.
The company believes that the technology will a become an essential installation as builders and resort owners look for alternatives to chlorine sanitation systems and has set a conservative sales target of $2.5 million by the end of June for the system.
Goh adds "it will be a big contributor to future sales. The patent gives us a competitive edge. Nothing can touch it."
The development comes at an ideal time for Waterco, which generated revenue of $68 million in the 2012-13 financial year but which is under pressure from foreign competitors.
Brisc designed the system for his son, who developed eczema and breathing problems when he swam in the family's chlorinated pool. He tipped $120,000 of his own money into it before Waterco agreed to co-fund further development.
The Hydroxypure system has the tick of approval from the National Asthma Council Australia which Waterco expects to be a strong differentiator.
In creating the Hydroxypure sanitisation system, Waterco has adopted technology which has revolutionised drinking water treatment, simplified the process and applied it to treating pool water.
Hydroxypure uses a combination of ozone and hydrogen peroxide to create one of the most powerful oxidisers in nature. Based on the Peroxone Treatment Process (PTP), which combines hydrogen peroxide (H202) and hybrid ozone (03), Hydroxypure essentially turbocharges' the sanitisation process.
Hydroxypure's hybrid ozone technology simulates the action of the sun it produces a high intensity wavelength of light which produces a clean form of ozone that's free of impurities. The natural flocculating effect that ozone has on water greatly increases the capability of the filtration system to be able to filter out oxidised contaminants in the water, leaving the pool water clean and crystal clear.
The use of two disinfectants (ozone and hydrogen peroxide) actively works in harmony to increase active oxygen in the water. The synergy of the two disinfectants ensures the water environment is safe, without the creation of harmful chemical by-products.
The end result is a swimming pool that's totally chlorine free and enriched with oxygen.
PTP is known as the new water treatment process of the 21st century, because of its superior ability to remove bacterial threats – better than any other oxidation processes currently available on the swimming pool market.
Hydroxypure tests the pool water and automatically maintains adequate levels of hydrogen peroxide within the swimming pool for continual sanitisation of the pool.
Additionally, the Hydroxypure system will respond to the different demands, by automatically adjusting dosing requirements for high bathing loads, hot weather, rain events and when pools are topped up. The pool water's pH level is also automatically adjusted, protecting the swimming pool and swimmers from unfavourable swimming conditions.
The Hydroxypure system also incorporates Waterco's award-winning filtration technology, the MultiCyclone. This centrifugal pre-filtration device performs a dual role of mixing the ozone into the water and providing adequate contact time with the incoming pool water, maximising the strength of the Peroxone reaction.
MultiCyclone also pre-filters incoming sediments, reducing the workload on the filtration system and, in turn, reducing filter maintenance leading to a reduction in water usage associated with backwashing and filter cartridge cleaning.
An affordable solution that can be easily installed on new pool installations or easily retrofitted to salt or chlorinated pools, Hydroxypure's key benefits include:
• Chlorine & salt free water
• No need to shower after swimming
• Outstanding water clarity
• Water enriched with oxygen
• Fully automated sanitisation and pH control
• Water saving
• Stain-free splash marks on the glass pool fences
• Extends the life of the pool surface and pool equipment
• Minimal maintenance
