Gold Coast Cultural Precinct moves forward

The Gold Coast Culture Precinct has taken a major step forward with Gold Coast City Council announcing that Stage One of the project will be delivered in time for the Commonwealth Games in 2018.

Funding for detailed design of Stage One has been delivered in the 2014/15 City Budget, signalling the city’s commitment to developing a cultural precinct of international standing.

Construction of the $37 million Stage One is expected to start early in 2016 and by 2018 the precinct will offer:

• A versatile amphitheatre for civic and cultural celebrations and an expected maximum capacity of between 8,000 and 10,000 people

• Riverside Gallery to store and display more of the City’s visual art collection. The City Art Gallery has outgrown its current 744 metre2 home and will expand into a larger 1,470 metre2 space in the Riverside building.

• Artscape initial landscape works to integrate the amphitheatre space with the new Riverside Gallery and enhance Evandale Lake.

The Council project team is currently working with architects ARM Architecture + Topotek1 to complete the precinct master plan and undertake the necessary studies, detailed designs and approvals for Stage One.
