Australia’s most modern library and civic hub opens in Melbourne's Docklands
The Library at The Dock, the new civic heart of Melbourne’s Docklands has been opened by Victorian Premier Denis Napthine, Lord Mayor of Melbourne Robert Doyle, Planning Minister Matthew Guy and Lend Lease Chairman David Crawford.
Rated with six star green star energy efficiency, making it Australia’s most sustainable community building, the three-storey building, positioned near Docklands’ new intersection of Collins and Bourke Streets, will provide an innovative space for people to meet, create, perform and be entertained.
Introducing the facility, Lord Mayor Doyle explained “Library at The Dock offers a traditional collection alongside digital content, free Wi-Fi, recording studio, creative editing suites, community meeting spaces, study areas, a performance venue for more than 120 people and gallery space.
“Flexible spaces will be available for a diverse mix of community groups, musicians and visitors, including a ventilated green terrace for yoga, tai chi and movie screenings.”
The $23 million facility is the result of a unique tri-partnership between Lend Lease, Places Victoria and the City of Melbourne.
Lend Lease’s Project Director for Victoria Harbour, Claire Johnston added “The Library at The Dock is the perfect example of our vision to create the best places for people. We’re proud to be involved in such an aspirational project and I look forward to seeing it come to life for the Melbourne community.”
Visitors to the library will enjoy some of Melbourne’s most spectacular views, across Docklands and the harbour.
Framed by water on one side and Buluk Park on the other, Library at The Dock also hosts a children’s playground, with mature trees and green spaces to relax and play.
