Toowoomba residents encouraged to be active during Queensland Walks Month

During September, Toowoomba Regional Council is encouraging residents to participate in Queensland Walks Month with its 2021 theme of ‘Celebrate Walking: Every Body, Every Place’ designed to focus on walking for all ages, abilities, and in all places in Queensland.

Queensland Walks Month is a free, online celebration of walking, running, rolling and strolling which offers individual participation, team entry or workplace involvement to help motivate colleagues to get active.

Toowoomba Regional Council Chair of the Regional Active and Public Transport Advisory Committee (RAPTAC) Melissa Taylor advises “the mornings are slowly warming up and with more daylight each day, now is the perfect time to get those steps up.

“We’re known as the Garden City with hundreds of parks and gardens and with the entire Region looking amazing at the moment, in time for the Carnival of Flowers we should all be taking advantage of this spring weather and choosing to walk to our parks and events.

“As well as the parks, we’ve invested significantly in our streetscapes to improve walking throughout the city centre, including the Russell Streetscape Refresh, Kwong Sang Walk and Carnival Lane.

“On top of this, we’ve invested in our laneway artwork and the best way to fully appreciate this is on foot.

“In our regional areas we continue to invest in footpath upgrades and maintenance through our annual programs and ‘The Change Project’ has many activities available to residents of all abilities. Or if you prefer bike, there are trails and paths which continue to be extended each year.

“Council have been a signatory of the Walk21 International Charter for Walking since 2018 and along with our Region’s Sustainable Transport Strategy, we’re committed to making this a more active and healthy Region.”

Queensland Walks Executive Officer and RAPTAC Member Anna Campbell notes “once you’ve registered, we want you to share your walking adventures on the QLD Walks website, by posting photos, videos, or your walking stories, to go into the draw to win a range of great prizes.

“QLD Walks Month is a great opportunity to connect the walkers of Queensland, and share where you walk with other walkers across the State.”

Campbell is encouraging residents to get involved by registering for Queensland Walks Month at www.queenslandwalks.org.au
