Geoff Carr farewells NSW Rugby League
After a 25 year career in full-time sports administration, NSW Rugby League (NSWRL) Chief Executive Geoff Carr ended his career, leaving his NSWRL role at the conclusion of his last contract period (31st October 2013).
Carr spent a decade as NSWRL General Manager and until 2011 was also Chief Executive of the Australian Rugby League, a role he held for twelve years.
A former player with St George, Carr played alongside greats such as Billy Smith and Graeme Langlands and was part of the Jack Gibson coached team that reached the 1971 Grand Final, going down to South Sydney.
He spent seven years as Chief Executive of the Dragons taking the club to two Grand Finals before joining the NSWRL after the 1995 World Cup.
Along the way he established a reputation as an astute manager of representative teams from World Cups in 1992 and 95, the last full Kangaroo tour of the UK and France in 1994 and nine years as Manager of the NSW Blues.
At the NSW and Australian Rugby Leagues, Carr, would play a role in some of the most tumultuous events in the game's history, from the Super League split to the formation of the NRL and the move to the present Australian Rugby League Commission.
Prior to his departure, Carr explained "I've loved every moment but everything has its time.
"I hope to see the VB Blues win back the Holden State of Origin Series this year and make room for someone else.
"I won't be looking for another fulltime role in sport but will certainly be going to a lot of footy."
NSWRL Chairman, Dr George Peponis, said that Geoff had made a remarkable contribution to the game of Rugby League, stating "he is someone who has been involved at every level of the code and who has earned an enormous level of respect.
"Through the many challenges and triumphs the game has faced, Geoff has always been someone that people could talk to and who would put the game ahead of everything else."
Carr is currently in the UK following the Rugby League World Cup.
