Future uncertain for South Australian midnight basketball program
The midnight basketball program used by more than 400 youngsters at the City of Salibury's Gardens Recreation Centre is in doubt because of a lack of funding.
The 10-week program is run twice a year at The Gardens Recreation Centre, however, it is in doubt having missed out on Federal and South Australian Goverment grants to continue.
The City of Salisbury Council has voted to "exhaust every opportunity" to secure funding for the program which costs about $42,000 a year to run,
The program, which started in 2009, had been funded by the Federal and South Australian Goverments, with support from Salisbury Council and community sponsors.
However, a submission for $146,000 from the South Australian Government and $73,000 from the Federal Government to expand the popular program over the next two years has recently been rejected.
Currently the program receives $25,000 from the South Australian Government.
A report on new funding options will be presented to the Council in the coming weeks.
Salisbury Councillor Chad Buchanan said it was "absolutely imperative to see the continued success of the program.
"We need to go back and ask for more funding from the State Government and explore every funding and grants opportunity available to make sure we get funding to continue this program."
A spokesman for South Australian Sports Minister Tom Keynon said the Government provided more than $200,000 a year to 23 sports organisations in the Salisbury Council district.
Over the past year, the South Australian Government has been trying to cap their contribution to the redevelopment of Adelaide Oval at $535 million, while admitting a final figure for the redevelopment can't be given.
