Funding assurances to see Northern Inland Centre of Sporting Excellence become a reality

Tamworth will soon boast new world-class sporting infrastructure, with the NSW Government committing $4.25 million to bring the $17 million Northern Inland Sporting Centre of Excellence to life.

With the Federal Government having already committed $8.5 million to the project and $4.25 million in funding from Tamworth Regional Council, the major overhaul of existing sporting infrastructure and the construction of new athletic, cycling and equestrian facilities can now begin.

Building on the Tamworth region's strong reputation for nurturing top level sporting abilities and hosting major sports events and competitions, the Council sees the Northern Inland Centre of Sporting Excellence not only as a way of enhancing recreational facilities for its community but also a benefit to the local economy.

The Council anticipates increased numbers of visitors to be drawn to the Tamworth Region to compete or spectate at major sporting events which will be held at the Northern Inland Centre of Excellence.

Located on the south side of Tamworth, the precinct already includes some  of the region’s premier sporting facilities - The Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre (AELEC), Tamworth Sports Dome and Tamworth Hockey Complex.

Commenting on the funding, NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro stated “the NSW Government is determined to grow regional sport from grassroots level right through to the elite level.

“Regional NSW deserves world-class sporting infrastructure like the Northern Inland Sporting Centre of Excellence and this shows how the NSW Government will continue delivering for our communities.

“This massive funding injection will also ensure Tamworth remains one of the nation’s premium regional sporting centres and tourist attractions.”
