Funding approved and EOIs soon to be issued for new Logan indoor sports centre

Funding has been approved for a new $142.1 million indoor sports centre in the heart of Logan City (south of Brisbane) with Expressions of Interest for works soon to be issued.

This investment will help meet future community sport needs and support the region to attract more major events.

Logan City Council is providing the land for the new facility at Logan Central and will own and operate the venue, ensuring that it continues to provide community benefits well into the future.

The accessible facility will consist of nine multi-purpose indoor courts across two separate halls capable of hosting 7,000 spectators during the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

With a flexible design, the centre will be able to accommodate a range of sports including basketball, netball, volleyball, futsal, handball, wheelchair rugby, sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball, badminton, fencing, table tennis, and taekwondo.

The venue will also feature on-site car parking, food and beverage outlets, function rooms and an administration office.

The Australian and Queensland governments have approved funding from the $1.87 billion Minor Venues Program to invest in the new centre.

Both governments have committed to sourcing at least 30% of procurement from Queensland small and medium-sized enterprises for the Minor Venues Program, as well as targets for 10-15% of labour hours on the projects to be undertaken by apprentices or trainees – helping to deliver the pipeline of construction workers the growing state needs.

Expressions of Interest for the Managing Contractor and Architectural Services are set to progress to market this month.

Treasurer of Australia Jim Chalmers noted “this is the biggest ever investment in local sporting infrastructure.

“It’s all about ensuring more locals can participate in sport and access a world class new indoor stadium.

“This will be an asset for our local community the benefits of which will be felt throughout south east Queensland.”

Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King advised “The new Logan Indoor Sports Centre will play its part in the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, but it’ll also be a sporting and community facility that locals can use and enjoy for years to come.

“With eight years to go until the Games, the Australian and Queensland governments are working together and we’ve now announced almost $1 billion in funding for 8 Games venue projects.”

Mayor of Logan City Jon Raven adds “The chance to potentially host Olympic and Paralympic events and training in the City of Logan will put us on the world stage to show off the beauty, culture and talent of this great city.

“As the fastest growing city in Queensland with a young and diverse population that has Olympic-sized dreams for the future, this investment by the state and federal government will be a legacy from the Games that our community will benefit from for decades to come.

“The indoor sports stadium will be owned and operated by the City of Logan and will become a beacon for state, national and international sports and events, while also increasing the number of courts we have to offer the residents of Logan.”
