New $14 million PCYC sports centre opens in Logan
The $14 million Cronulla Park Indoor Sports Centre - run by PCYC Logan and officially opened today - is a modern, 4700 metre2 complex featuring a 24-hour gym with full-sized boxing ring, a rhythmic and artistic gymnastics hall, and multi-purpose rooms with sprung floors for dancing and martial arts.
The facility was delivered in line with Logan City Council’s Active Logan Strategy 2016-2028, which aims to support active and healthy lifestyles.
The Cronulla Park Indoor Sports Centre, on the corner of Compton Road and Kingston Road in Slacks Creek, is stage 1 of Logan City Council’s Cronulla Park Sports Master Plan.
The centre’s rhythmic and artistic gymnastics venue has been purpose-built to meet regional standards and is anticipated to become a training facility of choice for professional gymnasts, and aspiring Olympians.
PCYC Queensland Chief Executive Phil Schultz said it was rewarding to see their new Logan club reach completion and advised “we are entering a new era with an exciting new home for PCYC Logan where we can build opportunities for young people in Logan.
“The PCYC is all about supporting young people and the community with innovative activities, programs, outside school hours care and more.”
The Queensland Government had backed the Cronulla Park Indoor Sports Centre with a $6.6 million contribution to the project, in partnership with the City of Logan.
Local State Member for Springwood Mick de Brenni said choosing to establish Cronulla Park as a world-class training facility for young Logan residents with an Olympic dream was the right choice.
“The venue presents a healthy and positive opportunity for aspiring Logan athletes ahead of Queensland’s transformational 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” Minister de Brenni said.
“It’s been four years since we chose to build facilities for young athletes instead of progressing the earmarked greyhound racing track and now we’ve secured an Olympics, it proves it was the right call for our community.
“This is a strong example of what the Queensland Government and local councils can achieve by genuinely listening to the community and working together for the benefit of local residents.”
With a large outdoor playground, Outside School Hours Care is available at the Cronulla Park complex for up to 100 young students.
Queensland Sport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the centre’s possibilities were almost endless and noted “Cronulla Park’s PCYC precinct gives coaches and mentors the facilities they need to have a positive influence on the lives of young Queenslanders.
“This will become Logan City’s centre for youth outreach and Indigenous programs, as well as initiatives to help the community stay active.
“Cronulla Park has potential as a regional training facility for elite gymnasts and an incubator for young Queenslanders to launch their Olympic and Paralympic dreams ahead of South-east Queensland’s 2032 Games.”
Logan City Mayor Darren Power said the PCYC was a great addition to the network of sport and recreation facilities across the city adding “there are many benefits from participating in physical activity and the programs that will be run from the new facility.
“These include improved individual mental health and well-being and increased social cohesion.
“The building we have designed in conjunction with the PCYC responds to the needs of the community and delivers a modern fitness and recreation centre for Logan’s young people.”
