Fresh Start 'Thrive Over 55' Fitness to Open

Fresh Start Fitness is to open an over 55's only fitness centre in the Sydney northern beaches suburb of Mona Vale.

Fresh Start Fitness, which operates a thriving club in the nearby suburb of Narrabeen, has seen the opportunity that an ageing population presents and developed the 'Thrive Over 55' fitness program to increase the quantity and quality of strength training available for people over 55 years of age.

As Fresh Start Director Scott Flint explains, "the general age of the population is becoming older and a number of health care issues arise in communities as a consequence of this ageing population.

"There has (also) been a groundswell of scientific research highlighting the benefits associated with strength training for the older population.

"These findings show that:

• Without strength training, muscle mass declines with age and declines at an accelerated rate after the age of 45;
• Falls are the leading cause of hospitalisation for people over the age of 65;
• The effects of osteoporosis are reduced by a progressive strength-training program;
• Resistance training in the older population improves strength, balance, gait, flexibility and co-ordination; and
• Muscle content and strength can be regained and improved no matter what the age or current condition of the person."

Flint continues that members of Fresh Start Thrive Over 55 Fitness "will be individually assessed and prescribed a strength and balance based program by one of our professional trainers who will be available to assist you at all times.

"As well as providing our state-of-the-art Over 55's fitness facility, we also offer improved memory and auditory processing with our Alzheimer's Australia endorsed Brain Training Program, beauty therapy treatments and massage, group training sessions and personal training."
