Fraser Island dingo destroyed after 'aggressive incidents'

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) has destroyed a dingo on Fraser Island after "a number of aggressive incidents", including biting two tourists.

QPWS rangers had been closely monitoring the dingo which was fitted with a satellite tracker collar after it had been involved in a number of threatening encounters over recent months in the Eurong area.

A QPWS spokeswoman said the decision was made after the dingo bit a tourist on Sunday.

The spokesperson explained "QPWS made the decision to humanely destroy the animal after it bit a 19-year-old male tourist on the thigh on the beach in front of Eurong township on Sunday morning, 16th August 2015

"This follows an incident last month when a woman was bitten on her left leg and right calf by the same dingo while she was taking photos on the beach just north of Dilli Village.

"The dingo was fitted with the satellite tracking collar in mid July after rangers were forced to close several kilometres of beach as a safety precaution following the dingo's involvement in a number of threatening encounters."

The collar contains new satellite tracking technology that provides increased polling times so that rangers can get timely data on the whereabouts of problem dingoes.

"This allows rangers to get a better understanding of dingo movements and allows them to quickly respond to possible human interactions if the dingo being tracked moves too close to camp sites or high use visitor areas," the spokeswoman said.

"Unfortunately this dingo presented an unacceptable risk and the decision was made to capture and humanely destroy the animal."

Rangers were also forced to close several kilometres of beach because of the dingo's behaviour.
