Fitness Australia backs National Reconciliation Week

Fitness Australia is backing National Reconciliation Week, which runs from 27th May to 3rd June, celebrating and building on respectful relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians.

In a statement, Fitness Australia explain “respect and recognition of our First Nation Peoples is the foundation of our journey toward reconciliation.

“Fitness Australia will lead the fitness industry to deliver more diverse and inclusive services (as) stronger relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples can help the fitness industry increase access and opportunity for participation in healthy lifestyle and exercise programs for all Australians.

“We do this by supporting increased participation by our First Nations Peoples in the fitness industry as both consumers and exercise professionals thereby creating a pathway to addressing important health and workforce inequities.”

Fitness Australia’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) outlines ways in which the fitness industry is working on contributions to Closing the Gap.

Fitness Australia also suggest a range of ways to be involved in National Reconciliation Week, including:

• Take a tour of Indigenous Art
• Attend Cultural Awareness Training
• Get together and screen Indigenous films and TV
• Participate in local community events
• Go on an Indigenous heritage trail.

Fitness Australia is also set to invite its business members to nominate for election to its Board of Directors. This year, there are three vacancies for elected directors, with the successful candidates to take office at the Annual General Meeting on 30th October 2015.

An Information Pack for potential directors is available on the Fitness Australia website www.fitness.org.au
