First Council FlowRider Opens

The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder has officially opened Stage3 of the redevelopment of its Goldfields Oasis facility, featuring Western Australia's only FlowRider.

The FlowRider, only the second in Australia, is the key part of Stage 3 of the Oasis redevelopment, and provides a new level of recreational activity in the Goldfields town.

The redevelopment, fully funded by the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, also features a Rapid Chute and a 10 metre waterslide, aims to complement the rest of the Goldfields Oasis Recreation Centre, and provide a key attraction for families and young people moving to Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

Speaking at the recent opening, Mayor Ron Yuryevich said the $2.3million project was undertaken by the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder to fulfil three of the City's key vision statements.

As Yuryevich explained "we want people to call Kalgoorlie-Boulder home, and to do that we need to provide first class facilities and services for everyone.

"Oasis Stage 3 is just one example of the fact that we are a sustainable regional city of the future, with a 'can do' approach."

FlowRiders offer an artificial sheet wave surfing environment. Incorporated in waterparks and resort hotels around the world (as well as on a number of cruise ships), the FlowRider sees riders slide down a ramp on a wakeboard into the curl of the wave.

Manufactured by Wave Loch, Inc. of La Jolla, California, FlowRider technology uses an array of high-output waterpumps to produce a 5cm deep flow of water that travels over a fixed, foam-padded surface. The water then recirculates through pumps located in a reservoir.
