Federal Government backs new Gold Coast Suns administration and training base
The Federal Government is to provide $15 million towards the construction of a replacement training and administration base for the Gold Coast Suns AFL Club at Metricon Stadium.
The Suns’ new $22 million headquarters will be part of a $106 million redevelopment of the Carrara precinct that will see the venue transformed into a high-performance centre after the 2018nCommonwealth Games.
With the AFL and the Suns jointly contributing the final $7 million to the project, Carrara will become an elite training destination that will target international sporting organisations.
The plans include two multi-sport indoor stadiums, an upgrade of Metricon Stadium and another outdoor sporting field along with an aquatic centre.
While work on the project is expected to be completed in 2016, the Suns will have to vacate the facility during the Games so it can be used for badminton and fencing tournaments as well as the control hub for Games officials.
Announcing the Federal Government funding, Minister for Sport Sussan Ley stated “the Suns are a key part of the Gold Coast sporting and cultural landscape and this facility will provide increased opportunities for the growth of the AFL in the region..
“This redevelopment will also contribute important infrastructure for the staging of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.”
In addition to the funding for the Metricon Stadium works, the Federal Government has provided $154 million to upgrade major sports infrastructure for the 2018 Commonwealth Games throughout Queensland.
This includes approximately half of the infrastructure investment in the $122 million Carrara Sports Precinct that includes stadium upgrades and new the Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre that will be the centrepiece of the 2018 Games.
