Dunedin Swim Coaching Board to be formed

Members are being sought for a new Dunedin Swim Coaching Board to oversee the coaching of the sport in the city.

Dunedin City Council General Manager Operations Tony Avery says the new Board arose out of the Council's consideration of the recommendations of the independent panel that had reviewed the city's swim coaching needs.

As a result, the Council has advertised in the Otago Daily Times looking for expressions of interest from people who would like to be involved.

Avery explained "we are looking for people who are committed to swimming and a strong, well-supported coaching programme that will be delivered by the Board.

"The concept of the Board has been well received by the general swimming fraternity and we expect to attract high calibre candidates for these positions.

"We are confident that it is the right path to take for Dunedin swimming and will result in a robust and strong swim coaching arrangements for the future."

It is hoped that the new Board will be able to meet by mid to late January to start the process of managing squad-based swim coaching services at Moana Pool.

Avert added "it is important that the Board is established as quickly as possible so they can focus on appointing the coaches and implementing the resolutions of the Council, based on the independent panel's findings."

Avery says the DCC has not entered into any arrangements that extend the existing coaching services past April 2013. That will be a matter for the Board to determine once they are established.

Coaches will be employed by the Dunedin Swim Coaching Board under the new arrangements, and not the Council.
