Swim coaching changes at Dunedin's Moana Pool

A shake up of swim coaching services at Dunedin City Council's Moana Pool is set to see the establishment of a Dunedin Swim Coaching Board of five people which would:

• Have a contractual arrangement with the Dunedin City Council to provide swim coaching services to squad based swimmers in Dunedin;
• Offer swim coaching assistance and guidance across all levels of swim training in Dunedin;
• Implement the recommendations of an independent panel.

The panel, consisting of internationally renowned sports academic and former Olympian Dr David Gerrard; Sport Otago Chief Executive John Brimble and former head New Zealand swim coach Mark Bone, was appointed by the Dunedin City Council's Community Development Committee in April.

The Panel's review contains the recommendations and involves some significant changes to the management of swim coaching.

The changes will also see funding of $40,000 per annum provided by the Dunedin City Council, from its current budget for swim coaching services at Moana Pool.

Consultation with Dunedin swimming groups and representatives are now underway.
