Diverse attractions underpin success of Dunedin’s Forsyth Barr Stadium

Dunedin’s Forsyth Barr Stadium is set to add a new event in its diverse programming when it hosts the D1NZ drifters motor sport challenge in December.

Part of a first of its kind event series in the Southern Hemisphere series, Forsyth Barr Stadium will host the opening round of the custom motorsport.

The hosting will require the laying of more than 3600 metre² of track inside the stadium, creating what organisers say will be the most unique motorsport exercise undertaken this side of the globe.

D1NZ Series Director Brendon White explains “the effort required to build an event of this nature is huge, but it's been a long time coming.

“We can't wait to see some of the best drift-cars in the world roar in front of a packed stadium atmosphere, combined with a fresh and exciting new show format this will be one not to miss."

Hosting the D1NZ event is another example of the diversity of programming at the covered all-weather stadium.

With the Highlanders Super Rugby franchise as its core tenant, Forsyth Barr Stadium has enjoyed some remarkable successes.

From a local population of 125,000, last November it hosted a crowd of 37,000 for a Fleetwood Mac concert – staged on a Wednesday night.

Other concert successes have included  Elton John, Neil Diamond and Black Sabbath.

Managed by Dunedin Venues Management Ltd (DVML), Chief Executive Terry Davies has established a good working relationship with promoter Live Nation and is anticipating the upcoming hosting of a soon-to-be-announced major event.

DVML has also formed a commercial partnership with Allied Press Ltd (publisher of the Otago Daily Times) in putting on The Great Kiwi Home and Living Show – a major local consumer exhibition.
