Darwin Basketball Stadium to host National Wheelchair Basketball League finals

Darwin Basketball Stadium is to host some of Australia’s best paralympians who will be competing in the National Wheelchair Basketball League (NWBL) finals from 15th to 17th July

This is the first time the event will take place in the Territory after being cancelled in 2021 due to COVID-19,

The spotlight will be on the Northern Territory team - the Darwin Salties - with local talent such as Clarence McCarthy-Grogan and Tom O'Neill Thorne co-captaining the team in its very first NWBL Season.

The event will feature both women’s and men’s teams vying for the 2022 Wheelchair Leagues National Championship.

The competition includes top teams from Sydney, Wollongong, Brisbane and Perth, with many players and supporters travelling to the Top End for the much-anticipated event.

Darwin Basketball Association Executive Officer, Kerri Savidge advised “this is big. Darwin will be hosting several male and female Paralympians in the Wheelchair League National finals in July 2022.

“The finals will showcase pathway and career opportunities for participants with a disability in our community.

“These athletes will have the opportunity to see the best of what the Territory has to offer – hospitality, Dry Season weather, high-quality sporting facilities and accessibility.”

NT Minister for Major Events, Paul Kirby notes “It is exciting Darwin will be hosting the National Wheelchair Basketball Finals in July, with the event to feature many hotly contested matches between the country’s top teams.

“Sport is a way of life for many Territorians, and this is another opportunity to watch professional sport in our own backyard and provide inspiration to our next generation of sportsmen and women."

NT Minister for Disabilities, Ngaree Ah Kit adds "I’m proud that the Territory is able to provide a platform for all sports at a national level while also highlighting the inclusivity of sports in the Top End.

"You can’t be what you can’t see, and for our own athletes of all abilities this represents a terrific opportunity to witness first-hand our nation’s best."

The National Wheelchair Basketball Finals are supported by the Northern Territory Government through the Northern Territory Major Events Company (NTMEC).
