d'Arenberg winery cube attracting 1,000 visitors a day

About 1000 people a day have visited the $13 million ‘Cube’ constructed in the vineyards of d’Arenberg in McLaren Vale it since its opening last year.

Opened in December, the five storey building houses public and private tasting rooms, several bars, a restaurant and an art gallery, with the cellar door open seven days a week and the restaurant (which includes a 3D food ‘printer’ as part of its equipment) serving lunch from Thursday to Sunday (there is also the longstanding Verandah restaurant at the winery).

Chief winemaker Chester Osborn, who came up with the vision for the building in 2003, said the initial feedback had been overwhelmingly positive.

Osborn advised “a lot of people were worried it would be an eyesore but people have been complimentary about the design of it (while) everyone’s been very excited about the wine tasting and elaborate food.”

The ground floor of the Rubik’s cube-like structure houses the Alternative Realities Museum, and visitors can download an app to learn about the 60 artworks on show.

Osborn adds “the art is very wine specific and d’Arenberg specific - it tells the story of the generations of d’Arenberg and it also tells how our wine is made.”

The Cube was built with the help of $2 million South Australian Government funding, with the completed project creating more that 50 jobs.
