Council calls for proposals on expanded Queenstown sport and recreation facilities

Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) is seeking proposals to develop a joint masterplan covering the proposed expansion of both Queenstown Events Centre (QEC) and Wanaka Recreation Centre (WRC).

The project will consider the development of all current and potential sites over the next 20 years. It will also look to future proof the district’s sport and recreation facilities beyond this in line with predicted population growth.

QLDC General Manager Community Services, Dr Thunes Cloete said the aim was to ensure QEC and WRC continue to play a key role in the social fabric of the district, advising “sports and recreation are both embedded at the heart of our community and so it follows that the facilities Council provides in this space need to adapt as our population increases and changes in character.”

The masterplan will add detail to the $12 million investment programme for QEC outlined in the 2018-2028 Ten Year Plan that includes two additional indoor courts, a multi-use artificial turf and an upgrade of its gym and group fitness facilities. The masterplan for WRC will be refreshed to complement the recently opened pool facilities.

Dr Cloete commented “as well as a significant building programme we’re looking to provide a balance between organised sports and more informal uses of the sites such as walking, running and biking trails and open spaces for activities like family picnics."

The joint masterplan will draw on recent research and consultations around user demand such as the draft QLDC/CODC Regional Sport and Recreation Facility Strategy and QLDC’s current Wanaka Town Centre Masterplan and Frankton Masterplan projects.

Dr Cloete concluded “connecting (the) Queenstown Events Centre and Wanaka Recreation Centre with proposed new residential, commercial and education hubs, especially via the active travel links being explored in the Wanaka and Frankton masterplans, is a particular focus. I’m looking forward to receiving some exciting, future-focused proposals.”

Proposals are being sought through the Government Electronic Tenders Service (GETS) site before Wednesday 17th October. Respondents will need to demonstrate experience in the preparation of masterplans for sports and recreation hubs and will be evaluated against weighted attributes such as relevant skills, methodology and price.
