Construction underway for new all abilities playground at Sir Zelman Cowen Reserve in Kooyong
City of Stonnington has advised that a new all abilities playground is being built at Sir Zelman Cowen Reserve in the south eastern Melbourne suburb of Kooyong.
Replacing the park's existing playground the new space will be filled with accessible play elements such as swings, sand and water play and interactive sculptures.
The design also introduces complementary facilities to make a visit to the new playground even more enjoyable, including an accessible barbecue, drinking fountain, shelter and toilet amenities.
Plenty of shade trees, planted out garden beds, a mix of soft and hard surfaces and custom play and furniture items will make this a popular place to stop, play and stay.
Construction of the playground comes following an extensive community engagement program to inform the design – initially to understand community expectations for an all-abilities playground and later to share the draft for feedback.
The City of Stonnington used community feedback to shape a playground design with equipment and play experiences to suit children, youth and adults of all abilities.
Partly funded through a Victorian Government's Suburban Parks Program grant, this is one of two new all abilities playgrounds being built within Stonnington, the other at Central Park in Malvern East is also under construction.
The new Sir Zelman Cowen playground is anticipated to open before the end of the year.
