Construction commences on Perth Zoo’s $3.8 million accessible playground
Construction has commenced on Perth Zoo’s $3.8 million all-ages, nature-based playground, marking a milestone for the Zoo's Master Plan 2040.
The playground is set to become a major visitor attraction and will complement the brand new café in the heart of the Zoo.
The project is designed to be accessible to children of all abilities and is expected to be complete by Spring this year.
The unique and cutting-edge playground has been designed by landscape architects Hassell and will be built by Crothers Construction. It encourages play which mimics and celebrates Perth Zoo's animals and conservation work.
Key features include a "cloud deck", climbable giant numbat, rope tunnels, swinging ropes, feather hammocks, slides, audio spotlights and more.
The "cloud deck" is the heart of the playground, using bridges, tunnels and ropes to provide an elevated experience. A mister system simulates a cloud while model cockatoos fly overhead.
The playground is expected to open simultaneously with the new café and function centre, improving the visitor experience and facilities.
WA Environment Minister Reece Whitby advised "construction of the new playground is another exciting step into the future for Perth Zoo and I'm proud to see it start to come to life.
"The playground has been designed to showcase Perth Zoo's unique conservation work and will be accessible to children of all ages and abilities.
"The new play space will be fun, vibrant and educational. It will allow Western Australian children and their friends to connect with nature and explore.
"I look forward to seeing the entire community enjoy the new playground and café this Spring, which also coincides with Perth Zoo's momentous 125th birthday."
