Community embraces Belgravia Leisure’s ‘Move It Canberra’ challenge
Residents of Canberra were recently challenged by Belgravia Leisure to ‘Move It’ on Saturday 23rd March with the event surpassing all expectations.
The incredible achievement of the ‘Move It Canberra’ challenge not only showed Canberrans’ dedication to their health but also highlighted the magic of community-driven efforts.
In what could only be described as a fitness frenzy across Lakeside, Stromlo and Gungahlin Leisure Centres, an impressive 79,000 active minutes were logged by 1,263 participants on Saturday between 7am and 2:30pm, smashing the target set by a staggering 790%.
The challenge was simple: the ‘Move It Canberra’ challenge sparked a calling on Canberrans to get moving for just 30 minutes on Saturday 23rd March to help spread the importance of moving for 30 minutes, five times a week; but what unfolded surpassed all expectations with the goal being smashed by 9:30am.
People from all walks of life gathered at Belgravia’s ACT venues for a lineup of over 20 free sessions designed for everyone, from children through to adults. Whether it was group workouts, hitting the gym solo or diving into some aquatic fun, there was something for everyone to rack up those active minutes.
Mat Pole, Belgravia Leisure Area Manager shared “we’re super proud of everyone who came out to ‘Move It’ and boost their physical and mental well-being. We wanted to remind everyone that staying active isn’t just about fitness, it’s also about coming together and taking care of our mental health.
“As promised, we’ll be donating $10,000 via the Belgravia Foundation to support improved access and participation in swimming, aquatic activities and water safety among the underrepresented communities of ACT.”
Participants embraced a variety of activities with 46% getting active in the pool, 24% hitting the gym and 15% working on their swimming skills, highlighting Canberra’s love for swimming with many eager to improve their skills.
Venue teams and managers led the charge, bringing infectious energy all day long.
Pole advised “over 1,263 participants logged their minutes, but beyond the numbers, each venue experienced a vibrant atmosphere and sense of togetherness that truly defined the event.
“We’re thrilled to keep this momentum going in the future by continuing to provide opportunities for everyone to stay active and healthy. Together, we want to continue to make fitness fun and accessible for all.”
The Move It Canberra campaign was a huge success, but beyond the physical gains, it emphasised the importance of community, inclusivity and coming together for a healthier, happier society.
