Club Active to open in Sydney's Dee Why

Club Active will be opening their eighth club – Club Active Dee Why – on 20th June in Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

Expanding on its current operations at seven clubs in south east Queensland, northern NSW, and the Sydney suburb of Castle Hill, Club Active targets a specific demographic of the over 50s.

Club Active Dee Why is offering strength training for the over 50s in Dee Why and is aiming to  change the way this demographic views health and fitness.

According to Jonathan Freeman, exercise physiologist and founder of Club Active, only around one in 10 Australians over the age of 50 do enough exercise to gain any cardiovascular benefit, while physical inactivity is the leading cause of death.

“And given our ageing population, this is a major concern,” he says.

He adds that part of the challenge, is that most major gym chains simply do not cater to this demographic, leaving many to feel uneducated about health and wellness, or simply too intimidated to even start.

“To put this into context, Australia’s health club industry is one of the strongest in the world, with sales revenue topping $2.9 billion. However less than 5% of the 50 plus population are represented in this figure,” he says.

According to Freeman, “Club Active is purpose-built to meet the needs of Australian boomers, offering a fusion of fitness and wellness services, medical grade gym equipment and university-trained exercise physiologists.

“We also work closely with GPs and other medical professionals to develop chronic disease management plans and exercise prescriptions tailored to individual needs, many of which are covered by health rebates.

“Our goal is to improve people’s physical, mental and social well-being, by offering a welcoming, supportive and fun environment where people can exercise safely and at their own pace, while connecting with a community of like-minded individuals.

Club Active facilities include:

  • Allied health clinic: Exercise Physiologists, Physiotherapists, Dietitians.

  • Medical-grade gym equipment.

  • Group fitness classes, suitable for all fitness levels.

  • Educational workshops and community events.

  • Members lounge and support group.
