City of Moonee Valley puts a gym in the Avondale Heights Library
Mindful that some who are keen to exercise find traditional gym environments off putting, the City of Moonee Valley Council has installed a gym in its Avondale Heights Library.
The installation is part of an initiative that has seen 'fitness hubs' installed in five community friendly locations owned by the Council, leveraging off their inclusive and welcoming reputations to encourage people of all ages, strengths and abilities to exercise.
A Council spokesperson advised "for many, the idea of walking into a gym filled with hundreds of fit people can be daunting.
"Some even put it down to just not being the ‘sort of person’ to visit a gym.
"However, the health benefits of regularly working out are impossible to deny, so (we have) decided to bridge the gap."
The Council has promoted the space with the following wording: “walk into Avondale Heights Library, through the book lined shelves and into our private fitness hub overlooking outdoor green space to immediately feel comfortable in the calm environment.”
Other facilities in the initiative are the Buckley Park Bowls Club, the Milleara Integrated Learning and Development Centre and the Niddrie Community Hub.
