City of Kingston moves forward with new Aquatic Facility Plan
The City of Kingston in the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne is moving forward with its plans for the development of a new aquatic and recreation centre following its adoption of an Aquatic Facility Plan to help guide the project.
Under the Plan, the council will deliver a new ‘district level’ aquatic and recreation centre with expanded facilities to meet community needs for activities such as warm water exercise and improved learn to swim programming.
The community was consulted through the development of the Plan, including a six-week consultation process in 2020 with surveys and webinars. Based on the best evidence available, and the council’s strong desire to deliver a best practice aquatic and recreation centre that will “stand the test of time”, the Plan also aims to represent value for ratepayers’ dollars.
The Plan outlines a ‘two-facility model’ that incorporates Waves Leisure Centre as the regional level facility in the north of Kingston and the proposed new centre as the district level facility to be located in the central/south.
Advising that the plan is an “exciting step forward” showing a commitment to significantly invest in a new centre to meet community needs for future generations, Kingston Mayor, Steve Staikos stated “aquatic facilities are extremely valuable for the community boosting the health and wellbeing of all ages, and also providing essential water safety education and a social gathering place for families and friends to come together.
“This is a major investment for our community and requires rigorous planning to make sure it’s delivered well. Council is currently conducting initial investigations of a number of potential sites for the new centre.”
