Children's bike track to encourage activity and cycling skills
Sydney Park will be home to one of Australia’s best bike tracks for children, with exciting new twists, turns and challenges to help young riders have fun and learn safe riding skills.
The new bike track will include a range of challenges for all abilities, courtesy of a beginners’ area and a more complex adventure trail for confident riders.
Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the City was building the new track alongside the Sydney Park Cycling Centre where hundreds of children already take part in balance bike and learn-to-ride school courses each year.
Lord Mayor Moore explained “the original children’s bike track in Sydney Park was one of the first of its kind and today it’s still incredibly popular with young riders from all over Sydney.
“This new and improved design will feature wider paths and challenges like hills, curves and bridges, along with fun inclusions to inspire the imagination, such as stop and go signals, post boxes, tunnels and water refuelling stations”.
Commenting on the benefits of cycling in young people, University of Sydney public health expert Dr Blythe O’Hara added “a recent University of Sydney study found nearly one in four NSW school children are overweight or obese. Bike riding is one of the most effective ways all children can increase their fitness.”
A new childcare centre will also be built near the new bike track, along with extra public toilets and picnic and BBQ facilities with seating for families.
New connecting pathways, landscaping and lighting will link the area to the rest of Sydney Park, including a fun ‘wetland explorer’ route to teach kids more about the wetlands, local area and other interesting facts.
Sydney Park is made up of 40 hectares of grassy slopes, landscaped gardens, rolling hills and picturesque wetlands. It also features an award-winning children’s playground with tactile play equipment to stimulate the senses of touch, hearing and sight.
Construction of the new children’s bike track will begin early in 2015.
