Cake on a stick a hit at Sydney Royal Easter Show

Well known for its novelty, and often high calorie, food offerings, the new ‘cake on a stick’ has been a popular new arrival at this year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Introduced by the Carousel Café, the new patisserie represents the latest in a long tradition of innovation in food for agricultural shows and carnivals.

Commenting on the new product, Shane McGrath, Head of Operations and Product Development at the Sydney Royal Easter Show told media “it tastes like a doughnut lightly fried, with a nice special funnel cake batter.

“Visually it’s impressive, and it’s a good snack to grab and run around with.”

Carousel Cafe Creative Director Jade Evans identified the sweet treat at last year’s International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) Convention in the USA, and has been offering cakes on a stick at his Royal Easter Show concession, with three toppings to choose from: strawberry, chocolate and maple syrup.

Commenting on the cake on a stick and future food plans, Evans explains that the treat is “like a cross between a croissant and doughnut in flavour; on a stick.

"Last year it was the waffle dog, which was like a hotdog in a waffle batter.

"Next year we're going to try the chip dog; that's like a dog wrapped in fried chips."

Looking forward, Evans adds "I guess you're always watching, always looking for the new thing."
