Cairns waterpark developer still committed to attraction dream

The backer of a long-awaited waterpark project in Cairns is still committed to the project and is currently trying to interest investors from Australia and Asia.

One year after the Adventure Waters attraction was scheduled to open, Paul Freebody has been buoyed by the 20% return on investment that backers of the newly opened Cairns Aquarium are enjoying as the tourism market in Far North Queensland continues to grow.

In a recent post on the Adventure Waters website, Freebody reinforced his “drive, commitment and determination” to bring the high-profile Cairns attraction to life.”

Referring to dispute with a previous investor that saw the project ground to a halt 21 months ago, Freebody stated “before last year’s events, we had worked to achieve a strong following of sophisticated investors from Australia and overseas … and we have started engaging with these parties again.”

The anticipated development, to be built on a 7 hectare site next to the Captain Cook Highway, has been plagued by setbacks after receiving Cairns Regional Council approval in 2009.

However, in conversation with the Cairns Post, Freebody said the project would be put before “sophisticated” potential investors from Australia and Asia during an extensive roadshow next month.

He advised “these are not your mum and dad investors, they are high-wealth companies and individuals.

“We’ve already got some (investors), but there’s still a way to go.

“The idea is to put the proposal in front of them, based on the fact things are now different in Cairns.

“It’s the combination of tourism and large amount of construction that’s going on … there’s momentum that should carry on for many years.”

The Adventure Waters investors roadshow will be in Brisbane on 9th October, Sydney on 10th and 11th October, Melbourne on 11th/12th October and Perth on 13th/14th October.

It will then move on to Singapore, Hong Kong and China during the week the period from 23rd to 28th October.
