Developer still hopes to advance Cairns Adventure Waters waterpark

Cairns entrepreneur Paul Freebody is still expecting to develop his planned Adventure Waters waterpark, with the project’s website currently now advertising a 2016 opening.

First proposed in 2008, the project was delayed by planning disputes with the Cairns Regional Council, access issues and concerns over drainage. Once all approvals were in place as of early 2010, financing for the project was then impacted by the fallout from the global financial crisis.

Most recently, the $43 million project, to be built on a 7 hectate block fronting the Captain Cook Highway at Smithfield, has been held up over electricity supply issies with Ergon Energy.

However, former Cairns Regional Councillor Paul Freebody claims the development is “shovel ready”, and progressing well behind the scenes.

Freebody recently told the Cairns Post “we are working hard behind the scenes in preparation of a start date.

“While preliminary connection plans are complete, detail is being finalised with regards to load requirements at the site – the power needed for plant and equipment at the facility,.

“Once load requirements for the site are confirmed, we will be able to deliver approval, design and planning for the connection in a timely manner.”

Freebody has also been encouraged by the Aquis Resort proposal.

When complete, Adventure Waters is planning to feature the latest water rides, including multiple water slides, an artificial surf wave, and children’s water play areas.
