Cairns ready for a month of national events
The arts and sport converge in Cairns this month with an exciting line-up of national events for locals and visitors to enjoy.
Tourism Tropical North Queensland Director of Business and Tourism Events Rosie Douglas said the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair along with NRL and AFL fixtures were secured as part the region’s Event Prioritisation Strategy.
Douglas advised “this strategy continues to provide a solid foundation for the leisure tourism event portfolio with a growing calendar of national and international events throughout the year.”
Explaining the growing importance of major events to the city, Cairns Mayor Bob Manning said Cairns stated “it's impressive that so many high-profile sporting games come to Cairns each year, and with the improvements to our cultural centres, such as Munro Martin Parklands, we are seeing more and more high-calibre arts events visiting our city as well.
"While these events attract visitors and provide an economic boost for our region, our own community is the biggest beneficiary."
The upcoming events include:
12th July: The Royal Ballet will stage a Gala Performance in Cairns’ Munro Martin Parklands – the first time they have performed in Cairns and 15 years since they last performed in Australia.
13th to 16th July: The Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) will transform the city of Cairns with its celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and culture spanning visual art, dance, music, theatre, fashion, workshops and forums.
Events include the CIAF Opening Night on Thursday 13th July at the Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal, the CIAF Fashion Performance 2017 - WANDAN on Friday 14th July at the Tanks Arts Centre and the Art Fair and Art Market at the Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal from 14th to 16th July
16th July: The South Sydney Rabbitohs will return for their annual NRL Premiership home game at Barlow Park in Round 19 when they face the North Queensland Cowboys.
19th to 21st July: The Cairns Show is the largest community event in Cairns with almost 80,000 people attending across the three days. More than 400 local industries promoted their products and services, while the Show also attracted large international and national businesses and industrial organisations to Cairns.
