Broadmeadows Aquatic and Leisure Centre upgrades halted by building contractor liquidation

Work on a $2.49 million upgrade program at Hume City Council's Broadmeadows Aquatic and Leisure Centre has been halted as a result of the head contractor, Xerri Group Pty Ltd, going into liquidation.

The Council have advised that works to the Centre, which was being undertaken between April and September 2019, are now suspended "while Council investigates the necessary steps to finish the project".

With the Centre remaining largely operational during the building works, as series of short term centre-wide shut downs have now been postponed.

Planned works at the 40 years facility include:

• Replacement/repair of the 25-metre pool hall roof
• Changeroom upgrades
• New steam room
• New on-deck showers
• New lockers that can be accessed by membership card or band
• Energy efficiency upgrades (double glazed windows, new LED lighting, new pool-plant equipment and upgrades to the heating and air control unit).
• Resurfacing of the pool concourse with anti-slip material
• Removal of the mezzanine balcony
• Replacement of the switchboard
• Installation of entry gates to aquatics area.

Responding to questions on social media about the appointment of the Xerri Group, the Council advised "Council established the contract with Xerri Group Pty Ltd through a detailed and thorough tendering process. It showed the construction company to be financially-sound and a best-fit for the job. This process included a rigorous procurement procedure that included financial and referee checks.

"We are unsure why the company went into liquidation."
