Book of Mormon heading to the Australian stage

The Book of Mormon, the multi-award-winning musical from the creators of South Park, is to open in Melbourne in 2017.

The Tony®, Olivier®, and Grammy® award-winning show, written by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone and Avenue Q co-creator Robert Lopez, will begin performances at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre from January 2017.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced that the musical would be staged in Melbourne in 2017 via his Facebook page, writing “I'm thrilled we’re bringing the most successful piece of theatre in the world today to Victoria.”

The satirical musical opened on Broadway in March 2011 following several years’ development. It tells the story of two young Mormon missionaries and their misadventures in Uganda, and satirises established musical styles as well as Mormonism.

The Australian production will be co-directed by the original creative team of Nicholaw and Parker, with choreography by Casey Nicholaw.

Parker, Stone and Lopez are excited to be bringing the show to Australia, with Parker stating “we can't wait to get started.

“Everyone says we should look to Tassie for casting so that's where we're going first."

The Book of Mormon made its world premiere in March 2011 at Broadway’s Eugene O'Neil Theatre. The London production opened in February 2013 at the Prince of Wales Theatre, winning four Olivier Awards®, including Best New Musical.

The show has set house records at 27 theatres around the USA, and broken the house record at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre more than 50 times. The London production broke box office records for the highest single day of sales in West End history.
