Bledisloe Cup fireworks incident leads to NZRU investigation
The New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) has suspended pre-match pyrotechnics displays at All Blacks games following an incident at last weekend's Bledisloe Cup fixture at Auckland's Eden Park that injured three people.
One spectator was taken to hospital and another two injured when fireworks misfired after the All Blacks performed their Haka prior the rugby union Test between New Zealand and the Wallabies.
The All Blacks and the firm that provided pyrotechnics have apologised for the misfire, with All Blacks Coach Steve Hansen telling Fairfax Media "I met one of the people afterwards and we offer our sympathy to the people that did get hurt."
Dr Martin Van Tiel of Van Tiel Pyrotechnics said the Waikato-based company was deeply sorry about the accident, adding "we can only deeply apologise for the injuries caused, and are working with Worksafe NZ and (the) NZRU to investigate."
Given Australia and New Zealand's love of fireworks to mark major entertianment and sport events, the incident is a concern for event and stadium managers.
A crowd of 48,000 saw the All Blacks defeat Wallabies 51-20 to retain the Bledisloe Cup.
