Bendigo Ulumbarra Theatre subcontractors payments remain unresolved

Five months after the opening of Bendigo’s acclaimed Ulumbarra Theatre a dispute between subcontractors who say they are owed several million dollars and the venue’s builder remains unresolved.

With theatre subcontractors still waiting for payment a senior negotiator from Victoria's Department of Education is still trying to settle disputes relating to the work on the new theatre.

The Victorian Government sent the negotiator to Bendigo in July to mediate the dispute between the Ulumbarra Theatre's builder, Contract Control, and subcontractors.

Businesses that worked on the $26 million project at the old Bendigo jail said they were owed several million dollars.

Victorian Education Minister James Merlino said the dispute was completely unacceptable.

Minister Merlino’s Department oversaw the project and said the negotiator was continuing to meet subcontractors to try to get the disputes resolved.

The Department said it was also ensuring the remaining work needed on sections of the site was being finished so a full certificate of occupancy could be issued.
